What do Financial Advisors Actually Do?

Taking a cue from Office Space, in this episode of “Real Personal Finance,” we’re here to answer that age-old question we get as advisors: “What would you say you do here?”

To be honest, the answer changes depending on which advisor you ask. First, you have your broker-dealer and insurance guys who focus solely on investments and insurance with the primary goal of selling products. Then you get into the financial advisors who help with investments and insurance, but also handle tactical stuff by helping clients solve specific issues as they come up.

Finally, you have the real financial planners (like us). We focus on helping our clients optimize four things: your money, time, energy, and talent. In short, we help clients envision the life they want to live and then view every area of their life through that lens.

Meg frames it as a two-step process: first, we seek to manage risks. Then, we plan for opportunities. We talk about the most common risks we help clients address, including:

  • Ensuring you have the right types and amount of insurance

  • Setting up an estate plan

  • Making sure you don’t have too much or too little money in cash

  • Saving the right amount of money for your goals

  • Aligning your investments with your life

  • Tax planning

  • And more.

Our primary role on an ongoing basis is to serve as a thinking partner for our clients. As issues arise, we come back to the core question: What do you want your life to look like, and how would this decision impact that? Scott shares a great example of a client who went on a ski vacation and then came back wanting to buy a ski lodge. Listen in to find out what they decided to do.

Ultimately, how you invest doesn’t matter if it doesn’t help you live the life you want. As holistic financial planners, we handle the tactical stuff while also keeping the focus on what matters to you. Tune in to learn more about the interesting world of financial advisors!
